Our Story
About 15 years ago, Al Sprunger started planting a few apple trees as a hobby. Each year he added more trees until now, the orchard located in Saginaw, Michigan, has over 300 trees and more than 30 varieties. Al, along with his daughter Cindy, and son-in-law Terry, have expanded the orchard to now include a new store building located at 6480 Davis Road in Kochville Township, just 1½ miles north of Tittabawassee Road and a ½ south of the campus of Saginaw Valley State University .
Operating from August through November, in addition to selling apples, they sell honey, caramel apples, and more recently they make cider that has become, for a growing number of fans, a favorite taste of the season. Cider production involves the washed apples being ground in a hammer mill, pressed in a “Good Nature Squeeze Box”, filtered and bottled at their Davis Road orchard.
Al attributes their cider’s fantastic fresh taste to several factors. To start with, only washed, hand-picked, fully ripe apples are used. Also, combining certain varieties gives a nicely balanced mix of sweet and tart flavors. Each batch throughout the season is a little different than the others.
Apple Valley Orchard is located at 6480 Davis Road, Saginaw, MI (Just 1½ mile north of Tittabawassee Road and ½ miles south of the SVSU Stadium). They can be reached at 989-776-6820 or store@avorchard.com.
